If there is one thing that you can change in a previous project of yours, what would it be?

It took me a while to draft my answer, which (is) divided into two parts.

Despite the cases when ideas were changed due to technical difficulties, as an artist, I prefer to trust those past decisions I made. They were the best choices that I could have made based on where I was, in terms of knowledge base, skillset, concept and contextual understanding. I either need to fully trust every decision I’ve made or to overturn/change all of them.

After all, simply locating a recent moment, I would choose these two works. I still have some finishing work to do, but they have changed from aluminum to brass, 2D to 3D, drawing to sculpture, one piece of puzzle from a blueprint has evolved into a sculptural interpretation of that very blueprint.

About Shao Jie

Jie Shao (b.1994) is an artist based in New York and Shanghai. Jie received an MFA from Parsons School of Design. From artful and accidental coincidence in historical fragments between Chinese and Western culture, to the particular discipline of knowledge (including the development of art medium, anatomy, and engineering). Jie’s sculpture and installation combine handmade sculpture, hardware, and artificial materials, with the transformation of one material in different forms (such as brass) to organize narratives hidden behind.

Jie is also working on Pararailing with friends, through different forms of practice including material, space, and text to extend the boundaries of being an artist as an individual.
